Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced Transport Design & Planning Engineer to support transport and optical network projects within the Verizon network. The role involves preparing detailed planning and design packages for Verizon’s fiber, optical and backhaul infrastructure across metro and long-haul regions. You will work closely with Verizon’s planning, engineering and provisioning teams to ensure designs meet technical requirements, quality standards and deployment timelines.

Key Responsibilities (Planning Focused):

  • Develop transport planning packages for fibre, optical and backhaul networks across metro and long-haul domains.
  • Prepare HLDs, LLDs, route maps, link budgets, wavelength plans and fiber allocation sheets.
  • Conduct capacity planning for fiber, DWDM/OTN systems, packet transport and aggregation layers.
  • Assess fiber availability, conduct feasibility studies and recommend optimal routing and design options.
  • Analyze current network utilization and forecast future demands based on traffic growth.
  • Perform design audits, planning reviews and network optimization studies.
  • Ensure all designs comply with the operator’s engineering standards, templates and quality expectations.
  • Coordinate with network engineering, provisioning and project teams regarding upcoming builds, rehomes and migrations.
  • Maintain planning data accuracy in transport inventory and GIS tools.
  • Support the transport planning team with documentation updates, planning trackers and design submissions.

Requirements:

  • Must be a US Citizen or Green Card holder (mandatory).
  • 5+ years of experience in transport planning, optical/fiber planning, or backhaul design.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • DWDM / OTN / Optical Transport
    • Fiber route engineering and wavelength planning
    • IP/MPLS transport concepts (OSPF, BGP, VLANs, MPLS basics)
  • Hands-on exposure to vendors such as Ciena, Nokia, Juniper, Cisco.
  • Experience with planning tools: GIS mapping, Visio, optical design tools, transport inventory systems.
  • Strong documentation skills with the ability to produce clear, accurate transport design packages.
